These maps are based on the results of the Hyogo Prefecture's earthquake damage estimates.Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which sandy soil in areas with high groundwater tables liquefies due to shaking from earthquakes. As the ground liquefies, buildings built on these areas can collapse, roads can cave in, and sewer manholes may lift up. Liquefaction occurred in many places during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake due to the long duration of the seismic motion compared to previous, shorter earthquakes. It's a good idea to imagine how much damage may result from liquefaction to help you consider what you would do in response and how you can prepare on a daily basis.Liquefaction Hazard MapLiquefaction Hazard Map
